The Murchison ferry set for grounding – Uganda safari news

murchison falls-imageThe Uganda safari destination of Murchison Falls National Park situated in the north west of Uganda is famously known as a great destination for wildlife safaris in Uganda. The park is traditionally known for being a habitat to the big five of the land animals including the buffaloes, elephants, lions and leopards before Rhinos got extinct in 1983 though they were later re-introduced in the nearby Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Murchison Falls National Park is traversed by the world’s longest river - the Nile River leaving a permanent natural feature of the world’s powerful Murchison Falls. The Nile bisects the park in two portions of the north and south sections respectively thus travellers on safaris and tours in Uganda connecting to either of the regions require a ferry to cross the Nile.
The ferry has operated at Paraa jetty for several years and it has become a heritage of the park. Operating on scheduled timetable, the ferry enables Uganda safari undertakers to connect to the north for game drives and those connecting to the south for connection to Hoima and visit to the top of the falls.
It is sad to note that this traditional ferry will be out of service on 23 Feb 2015 for maintenance. Though this will cause inconveniences, it will present smooth and safety ferry running once it resumes service on 25th Feb 2015.

However, since the inception of this initiative in February last year, its take up has not been to the maximum despite it being cost effective. The players in this initiative have resolved to carry out an audit its performance. The baseline survey also has an interest in the usage of national IDs for citizen cross boarder travel in the three states.
The proposed audit is aimed at identifying the gaps in the initiative which in turn will present a range of opportunities for government agencies and operators. The current report from Kenyan Authorities indicate that only 1,560 single tourist visas were sold as at December despite the enormous numbers that undertook safaris in the region including safaris and tours in Uganda in the year 2014.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF A GOLF COURSE IN MURCHSION FALLS NATIONAL PARK HITS A DEAD END – UGANDA SAFARI NEWS

murchison-imageMurchison Falls National Park positioned in the north west of Uganda is a rich Uganda safari tour destination with a wide range of attractions and tourism activities. Some of these include the thrilling game drive in the northern section of the park which exposes you to wild game species like giraffes, lions, Jackson’s hartebeest among others and the Nile launch cruise which exposes you to the aquatic dwellings of the world’s longest Nile River such as Nile crocodiles and Hippos.
The Madvani Group under its trading section the Marasa Holdings Limited expressed the interest of setting up a golf course close to one of its luxury lodges named Chobe that offer accommodation to Upmarket clients on Uganda safaris and tours in Murchison since 2006 though it received a negative feeling from a range of conservationists in Uganda.
Despite the Presidents support, the golf course move was rejected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the National Environmental Management Authority citing its negative effects to the environment and its disgrace in the protected area.
Following several years of hassle, the Madvani Company eventually let go of the venture and took up the proposed alternative land at Karuma Wildlife Reserve. The then  Uganda Wildlife Authority Executive Director Dr. Andrew Seguya noted in his explanation to the parliamentary committee on Trade and Tourism that following several discussions with Marasa they have reconsidered the site for the golf course to the neighbouring Karuma Wildlife Reserve – something he noted that it would serve all interests for the travellers wishing to do safari tours to Uganda, public, investors while avoiding negative impacts.
The golf course which is known for consuming a lot of water and at the same time encouraging chemical applications would have had a lasting effect on the biodiversity in Murchison Falls National Park thus affecting the tourism products that are normally encountered on Uganda safaris.
