A tale of two brothers’ rwansigazi and mwirima – Uganda gorilla safari news

gorillas  Once upon a time in the forested Buhoma province of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park there lived a family called the Habinyanja mountain gorilla family. From a river called “Nyanja” (which in a local language means a water source), that flowed through their homeland, the group received its name Habinyanja. In 1997 this family was habituated and received its first visitors on a Uganda Gorilla Safari in 1999.
With an extended family that stretched to a record 30 individuals Mugurusi meaning “old man” cleverly led the Habinyanja family. Mugurusi had a number of sons among which 1 (one) was the most popular, and Rwansigazi was his name. It was not a surprise at all that the bigger number of the family expected him to take on the leadership of the mountain gorilla group after his father. Like the meaning in his name, Rwansigazi (youthful) was very adventurous and made occasional voyages to the forests around his home which today can be seen during a Gorilla Safari and Tour in Uganda.
Mwirima, Rwansigazi’s younger brother was however becoming stronger and quickly maturing by the day. Mwirima (which means Dark in a local dialect) was reserved in nature and spent the bigger part of his day relaxing with the rest of the family.
Although in the past there had been an ultimate guarantee of the heir, at the unfortunate death of Mugurusi, Mwirima had also grown to a size and strength relative to that of his older brother Rwansigazi. The decision on who was to lead the Habinyanja mountain gorilla family was stiff, but after a period of family discussion, the gorilla group agreed to split power between the two brothers. However because of the difference in leadership styles some members heeded to the directions of one brother and paid a deaf ear to what the other brother had to say.
In 2002, the group peaceably split into 2 (two) with one group following Rwansigazi, and the other staying with Mwirima. The group which trailed behind Rwansigazi maintained the name Habinyanja, while the others who preferred to stay with Mwirima formed today’s Rushegura family and can both be visited during a Gorilla Trekking Safari in Uganda. Today the groups still maintain close ties, evidenced by their periodic visits to each other.
The Rushegura mountain gorilla family has 19 individuals and is still led by their 25 year old alpha silverback Mwirima. The Habinyaja mountain gorilla family has a total of 17 folks with 2 (two) silverbacks and their alpha silverback is called Makara. Makara did not wait for Rwansigazi to die before taking over the leadership of this mountain gorilla group.
While on a Safari in Uganda, make it an effort to journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where you can visit these two legendary mountain gorilla families along the Buhoma Gorilla Safari trail head.

Exploring the sabyinyo gorilla family in rwanda – rwanda safari news

gorilla safaris and tours ltd  Volcanoes National Park located in the north west of Rwanda that is usually encountered on gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda has ten (10) gorilla families that are habituated. These gorilla groups thrive on the rolling slopes of the Virunga massif which is a thread of the eight volcanic mountains stretching from the south western tip of Uganda through North West of Rwanda to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Sabyinyo gorilla family is noted to be one of the impressive gorilla families in Volcanoes that comprises of eight (8) members led by the powerful silver back Guhonda a remarkable creature that is always sought for by travelers whole on the or gorilla safari in Rwanda. Guhonda is noted to be the largest of all the Silver-backs in the Volcanoes National Park and has managed to keep Ryango his main rival outside the group thus prompting him to live a lonely lifestyle.
Though the Sabyinyo gorilla family has few members as compared to other gorilla groups in the park, the impression and the experience is equally rewarding. The Sabyinyo Gorilla family is named after the Sabyinyo Volcano that loosely translates into Old man’s teeth due to its rugged volcanic top that was bestowed upon it following series of denudation.
The Sabyinyo Gorilla Family is closer to the park’s edge thus making it easier to trek than some of other gorilla families like Susa and as a result elderly and travelers that do not wish to do a lot of hiking while on Rwanda gorilla safaris and tours are allocated this gorilla family.

One year down the road; air Uganda cannot be traced – Uganda safari news

Air-Uganda-582x309Transport is noted to be among the vital components of the tourism package included in a Uganda safari package thus talking about Air Uganda is of particular interest to every industry player. It can be noted that it would be around this time that Air Uganda would be jubilating its existence in Uganda but following its folding last year, the airline is no more.
The clipping of Air Uganda’s wings by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority following the audit by the international Civil Aviation Organization was to mark the end of Air Uganda operations in Uganda since August 2014. The withdraw of an operating license curtailed the airline flights both within the country and the outside which affected travelers that tended to use its service including the travelers on safaris in Uganda.
The communication from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority shown that International Civil Aviation Authority Organization had ascertained that airlines certification process was irregular and yet in industry where surveillance
was low international set standards. Therefore, Air Uganda like other local airlines had not passed the audit and as thus could not proceed with operations unless it passes through the process of re-certification. This was welcomed by mixed feelings especially in a country like Uganda where the aviation sector is not well developed meaning that the flights had to reduce affecting the travel of passengers that wished to undertake safaris to Uganda.
The carrier which was noted by the Transport Minister Ibrahim Byandala as towing to the dangerous line with close misses to accidents ad crash landing not forgetting the failure to present the fleet maintenance documentation could not escape closure as there existed a huge gap in its quality operations.

Bugingo Silver back which is estimated to be 53 years old is still thriving with the family which is not a common case with the gorillas as the overthrown silverbacks tend to resort to a lonely life abandoning the group for example what happened in Mubare gorilla family in the Buhoma north of Bwindi gorilla National Park where gorilla safaris in Uganda are also carried out.
Though the Nyakagyenzi gorilla group has been noted to have frequent crossing to Democratic Republic of Congo, it has settled now for some time on the Uganda side presenting an assurance for travelers who would wish to visit Mgahinga on their gorilla trekking safari to Uganda.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the second park in Uganda with mountain gorilla population and is part of the great Virunga massif where counts of 480 mountain gorillas park known to be thriving. It is 519km from Kampala about 10 hours’ drive. The presence of the three volcanic peaks, the gorge and the remarkable flora make the Uganda gorilla safari tour to Mgahinga Park memorable.

Exploring the Susa a gorilla family in Rwanda – Rwanda safari news

RwandaGorilla The Rwanda gorilla safari destination of Volcanoes National Park has ten (10) habituated gorilla families that thrive on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes where they have survived for centuries past.
Previously studied by the legendary Dian Fossey, the Susa A gorilla family is one of the most sought after gorilla families by travelers on gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda because of its special touch to the famous gorilla conservationist and its long time existence.
Deriving its name from the local river named Susa that flows through their place of abode, the Susa A gorilla family presents itself as the hardest gorilla family to trek considering the fact that it dwells in the highest slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes However, to neutralize this challenging hike, the trackers from the Rwanda Development Board would ascertain where the group is the evening of the previous day so as to provide smooth trek to the next trekkers on gorilla safari in Rwanda. Because of its distant and yet challenging movements, gorilla trekkers have been stopped at times to explore it.
With a family size of twenty eight (28) gorillas, Susa A is gifted with three (3) silverbacks. Amazingly, the group was even larger with 42 members before splitting to form the Susa B. During that time, when one encountered it during his/her gorilla safari in Rwanda, the eyes could only land on gorillas everywhere.
Apparently, the joyous moods in the group are brought up by the two playful twins Impano and Byishimo and poppy which is among the oldest habituated gorillas. Poppy is known to have been born in 1976 and is among the first gorillas to be habituated by Dian Fossey. Exploring the Susa A gorilla group while on a gorilla safari in Rwanda is one of the memorable encounters that one can have in Rwanda.
