THE MOUNTAIN GORILLAS OF THE IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK OF BWINDI – UGANDA SAFARI NEWS

uganda gorilla safarisPositioned in the south west of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has got almost half of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas that have formed the ground for gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda. Extending to over 321km2 of Afromontane forest, the hilly landscapes of Bwindi that lie between the altitudinal levels of 1,160 – 2,607 Km above sea level have presented themselves as the ideal habitats for these endangered species.
400 of the 880 mountain gorillas that are apparently thriving in the wild with none known to be thriving in captivity live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and are always encountered on Uganda gorilla safari tour. Before the emergence of gorilla safaris in the early 1990s, mountain gorillas were like any other wild animals and their conservation efforts were very limited thus threatening their survival. The emergence of gorilla tourism saw them being habituated to accommodate people which attracted the interest of people towards them and their general conservation thus gorilla tracking activity was introduced as another strategy of conserving them.
Thriving in the four (4) regions of Bwindi namely; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has got twelve habituated gorilla families that are encountered on gorilla safaris and tours in Uganda and Rwanda. Buhoma has got Habinyanja, Rushegura and Mubare while Ruhija has got Kyaguriro, Bitukura and Oruzogo. Rushaga has Bweza, Kahungye, Nshongi, Busingye and Mishaya while Nkuringo has got Nkuringo gorilla family.

RELIGION AND AMIN COULD HAVE A COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE FOR UGANDA – UGANDA SAFARI NEWS

uganda safarisUganda is considered to be among the Africa’s ideal destinations considering her potential in offering gorilla trekking safaris, wildlife safaris, chimpanzee trekking safaris, cultural tours, adventure tours and scenic viewing. But like most of other African countries, these safari offerings are available in other countries creating a state of cut throat competition and sometimes a higher advantage as those countries have great concentrations of wildlife or have already positioned themselves better than Uganda in those selling prepositions.
The flagship brand of Uganda has thus remained for long an issue of contemplation and this has sometimes affected the number of travellers planning safari tours to Uganda. It was at the recently concluded African Travel Association (ATA) congress that tourism experts from various countries offered their advice to Uganda regarding the key her selling prepositions.
Three areas have been identified including Uganda Martyrs, Former President Idi Amin’s history and nightlife of Kampala to be one of the potential areas where Uganda can have a comparative advantage over other countries regarding attracting tourists to undertake safari holidays in Uganda. The trend in African tourism is that Africa should focus on  and put together packages that are ideal for Africans. For example, there is no African who has never heard of Idi Amin thus museum and monuments should be put up to tap this potential.
Regarding the Uganda Martyrs, if properly marketed, Uganda can be considered as a top most sacred destination for religious tourists. Alongside the Uganda Martyrs, Uganda is rich in other religious wonders for example; it has the world’s smallest church with the maximum siting capacity of 3 people found in Nebbi, the second largest mosque on the African continent – Gadhafi National Mosque, the biggest church in East Africa – the Liberty Worship center with seating capacity of 15,000 people, the Baha’i Temple which is the only Baha’i Temple in Africa and the Abayudaya (black Jews) of Mbale.
Capitalizing on these selling prepositions would give Uganda a comparative advantage over her competitors which would increase the number of travelers undertaking safaris in Uganda boasting the returns in tourism including revenue and jobs.

volcanoes-national-park in rwandaThere are a range of conservation strategies ranging from ecological, economical to cultural approach. All these have been exercised in different protected areas and have had both positive and negative implications. But of recent, the cultural approach has proved to be more effective and sustainable. Volcanoes National Park also referred to as Parc Nationale des Volcanoes in French is one of Rwanda’s prime safari destinations usually encountered on Rwanda safari. Volcanoes is an enjoinment of the Virunga protected area and thus a home of mountain gorillas which makes it famous for gorilla trekking in Rwanda. It provides a strong core and acts as a selling preposition for wildlife safaris or chimpanzee trekking safaris in the adjacent Akagera and far most Nyungwe national parks respectively. This makes it to be added on the list of travellers while planning their safaris to Rwanda. Volcanoes National Park is quick to realize the strength of this new management approach. It has recruited the former poachers and trained them to take up positions in the thriving eco-tourism trade. This is to be achieved by allocating a portion of the tourist fees paid for gorilla trekking to community projects so as to assist the former poachers identify alternative sources of livelihood that are in good terms with the environment. This will in turn ensure species survival thus sustaining safaris in Rwanda or position its self in the market as a marketing technique only to end up increasing safaris to Rwanda.

While the development of low budget accommodation has stood as pocket friendly offer for domestic Uganda safari undertakers for example changing of former UWA headquarters at Mweya to accommodation center making it cheaper for locals compared to spending a night at Mweya safari lodge.

This affects the tourism industry and thus decline in the number of safaris in Uganda.
Development in the tourism industry is also affecting and altering the nature of the vegetation. Accommodation and other infrastructural development have led to clearing of some vegetation this leads to the disturbance in the ecosystem running. Development should be in balance with ecotourism, and environment in order to create a good environment for tourism and also to preserve for the future generation and thus increasing safaris to Uganda.
The future of our environment depends on the hands our stake holders. Therefore there is need for conservation and balance between tourism development and maintenance of the environment.
